Hey fellow warriors! Here at AW, we’ve been as busy as ever, wrapping up the Prom Project at Open Hand; continuing the workshops for Be Awesome, Be Aware; and gearing up for our annual adult prom fundraiser in May. Here’s a quick recap:
The girls from Cross Keys and Maynard Jackson dedicated their Sunday to packaging meals at Project Open Hand, which distributes about 5,000 meals every day for a growing population of chronically ill patients. Open Hand has served the Atlanta community for more than 20 years, offering Comprehensive Nutrition Care for disease management and prevention, group information sharing and self-management support sessions, and Medical Nutrition Therapy. The staff is incredibly efficient, organized, and helpful, making the volunteer experience both easy and rewarding. The girls loved it—and even looked fabulous in their hairnets and aprons. After packaging meals, each girl received a newly dry-cleaned dress, previously chosen at Dress Day.
Meanwhile, we have been continuing the Be Awesome, Be Aware program at Cross Keys with great success. For our Self-Defense workshop, we had guest speaker Todd Layton speak about his experience as a police detective at Dekalb County. He talked about the importance of trusting your gut and being aware of your surroundings. Next, for our Positive Body Image workshop, life coach Leigh Layton (Todd’s wife!) and Dance101 instructor Desiree Nathanson worked in tandem to promote healthy self esteem from both the mind and body. We made emotional breakthroughs with Leigh, while the girls got to have fun learning a dance with Desiree. Coming up next week, we have Banking On Our Future (from Operation Hope) visiting for a session on Financial Literacy. Last but not least, we’ll end the program with a workshop on Civic Duty and what it means to be socially responsible and aware.
With the Prom Project over and the workshops nearly wrapped up, we are turning our attention to other events. Coming up on March 27 is Sanctuary’s 70s-inspired Share the Love benefit concert at Eddie’s Attic, benefiting Atlanta Pet Rescue, Georgia Organics, and yes—us! Show us some love and get your tickets today. In May we’ll have our annual adult prom fundraiser at Sutra Lounge in midtown. More details to come next week, but let’s just say you won’t want to miss it!
