Bonjour! (Pardon our French, but we’re still recovering from an unforgettable Friday night in the City of Light.) We had an amazing turnout for our 3rd annual prom fundraiser, A Night In Paris, and we couldn’t have asked for a more spectacular crowd. Merci beaucoup to all: our Board of Directors, prom committee, Sutra Lounge, LeahAndMark.com, DJ Sumo, our event sponsors, raffle donators, and of course — you! Remember: 100% of the proceeds will go toward funding programs for underprivileged teens in Atlanta. Up next for us: Cross Keys Honors Night, where we’ll award not one but TWO scholarships for participants from this year’s Be Awesome, Be Aware.

In the meantime, here’s some eye candy/hilarity for those Monday blues: photobooth pics from LeahAndMark.com. Enjoy!

Meet Cathy, Our First Scholarship Winner

Last spring, we implemented our teen awareness program, Be Awesome, Be Aware, at Cross Keys High School. The purpose of our program is to prepare teen girls for life after high school, when you’re ready to take on the world — but can’t quite figure out how to cook, apply for a job, or recognize potentially dangerous situations. After getting to know the girls from The Prom Project, it was clear that some of them, like many teens, needed a little guidance and some sort of support group. Over the course of the semester, we met for seven workshops on issues like career preparation, nutrition, self-esteem and positive body image, self-defense and safety, financial literacy, teen pregnancy prevention, and civic duty. As time progressed, we got to know the girls on a more personal level; Cathy was one of those girls. Because of her enthusiasm, dedication and open heart, she ended up winning our program scholarship of $1,000. Cathy is the first person in her family of 9 kids to graduate from high school, and she’s currently pursuing a degree in nursing while also working part-time. For the past year, our good friend and amazing videographer, Suban Dey, has been filming a documentary of Cathy and her life after Athena’s. Here, in her own words:

Dress Day Madness

Spring is in the air, and prom is just around the corner. For us, you know what that means: Dress Day! After completing community service hours at Project Open Hand, the girls were ready for a day of “shopping” for the perfect prom dress. Just so you know, we at Athena’s are pretty hands-on with everything we do. On Dress Day we pack up hundreds of dresses, set them up at school, bring snacks and refreshments, provide transportation to those who need it, and make every effort to ensure that each girl leaves happy. And thanks to our hard-working staff and volunteers, that usually happens without a hitch. Major kudos to our wonderful volunteers, both new and old, and many thanks to our photographer, Jo Arellanes from LeahAndMark.com. Check out her photos from the day!

Now, start shopping for your own prom dress! Our adult prom fundraiser, A Night In Paris, is coming up on April 27, and you shouldn’t miss it. It’s your chance to have fun, win prizes, and dance the night away while also supporting our little org. Buy your tickets today, and kindly RSVP to our Facebook event!

Sunday Fun Day at Project Open Hand

120 collective hours at OH!

On Sunday, we headed over to Project Open Hand with 40 teenage girls to complete the first portion of The Prom Project. In exchange for a prom dress, each girl donates 3 hours of community service at Open Hand, one of our favorite nonprofits in Atlanta. For the unfamiliar, OH packages and delivers nutrition-conscious meals to elderly and chronically ill patients. They’ve been operating since 1988 and have recently reached a milestone: 20,000,000 meals delivered! This was our third year packaging meals at Open Hand for The Prom Project, and as always we had a blast. Next up: Dress Day on March 10!

Looking for Dress Day Volunteers 3/10

Interested in helping a girl find her dream dress for prom? We’re looking for volunteers for our next Dress Day at Cross Keys High School. The date is Saturday, March 10 from 9:30 to 3:30—we work in shifts, so you don’t need to be there the entire day. Volunteers are paired with a recipient for a personal “shopping” experience and are expected to be encouraging, positive, and supportive. Other duties include help with set-up, breakdown, and sign-in sheets. Snacks and fun provided! If this sounds up your alley, please fill out our volunteer form.
