Athena’s Warehouse is a volunteer-driven organization, and we depend on your participation in a number of ongoing initiatives, including:
Dress Day
As part of The Prom Project, we organize a Dress Day for the recipients to choose a prom dress. We bring racks of dresses to the participating schools and pair each recipient with a volunteer for a personal “shopping” experience. Volunteers are expected to be encouraging, supportive, and enthusiastic. Other duties include help with set-up, breakdown, and sign-in sheets. Due to the sensitive nature of this event, we can only accept female volunteers.
Community Service
In exchange for a prom dress, recipients are required to contribute three hours of community service to Project Open Hand, a nonprofit organization that delivers nutrition-conscious meals to chronically ill patients in the Atlanta community. Volunteers are asked to package meals along with the girls for a positive, group-bonding experience.
Fundraising Committee
Our annual adult prom fundraiser, held in the spring, is our revenue-generating event of the year. We have a small prom committee of volunteers to help decide on a theme, secure sponsorship, sell tickets, and promote the event.
Guest Speaking
For our teen awareness program, Be Awesome, Be Aware, we rely on professional guest speakers to lecture on a variety of topics, such as positive body image, nutrition, teen pregnancy prevention, self-defense, college preparation, and civic duty. Past speakers have included volunteers from Planned Parenthood, Banking On Our Future, and Dance 101.
