You Give, We Give, What Gives

With the help of our volunteers and supporters, we reached our $300 goal to fund a one year scholarship for a school girl in Sudan through the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation.

Additionally, we have funded a microloan through Kiva.org to Noziramo Kurbanova, a mother of four, who runs a clothing business to earn money to fund the education of her children. We still have our soft, locally designed & printed purplicious tees available for a $10 donation, funds going to AW for future projects. Grab yours before they’re gone!

And finally, Blogger Betty Londergan featured us in her What Gives 365 blog as part of her promise to give away $100 a day to an organization or person for 365 days. Thanks, Betty!

AW T-Shirt Project

In Southern Sudan, less than one percent of girls completes secondary school. Due to economic hardship, girls are often married off at a young age to either lessen the economic burden or as a survival strategy for the family. It is more common for a young girl to be a wife or a mother rather than a student. In 2009, the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation opened a new high school in Marial Bai, Valentino’s hometown. Valentino, a Sudanese refugee, was one of the infamous Lost Boys of Sudan who made Atlanta his home after narrowly escaping the civil conflict in his region. In 2003, Valentino met Dave Eggers, who subsequently authored his biography, What Is The What. Both Valentino and Eggers agreed that all proceeds from the book would go towards the Sudanese community.

Hundreds of girls applied to the new school in Marial Bai, but cultural pressure and lack of boarding facilities prevented them from enrolling. The foundation is currently raising funds to continue community development as well as provide female students with a safe learning environment. Construction is almost complete on the new girls’ dormitories, which will accommodate nearly 100 young women. AW’s T-shirt project will raise $300 to provide a one-year scholarship for a school girl, in the hopes that she can foster an education and have an alternative to early marriage.

Our soft, fitted cotton blend tees were printed locally by Crescent Screen Printing. The $10 donation will go directly to the Valentino Achak Deng Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Special thanks to our models, Chelsea and Jen, and to LeahAndMark.com photography for donating their time and featuring our tees on the Art on the Beltline project.

Our prom committee would like to thank all you handsome guys and beautiful dolls for a lively, fun-filled evening! We loved seeing you in your tuxes and old school prom dresses with your slick moves on the dance floor. We would like to thank our lovely bartenders, Tracy Hicks and Lucia Goodman, for keeping our cups full of Sweewater beer and delicious prom punch featuring PAMA liqueur and for giving us healthy hangovers to nurse on Saturday morning! Please take a moment to check out photos taken by Joel Crawford – props to Joel for all the hilarious photos and for traveling to Studioplex from Villa Rica in the horrendous weather. Recyling + Sequins + Community Service = Prom Party 2010!

The ladies at Athena’s Warehouse have been working tirelessly to ensure you get to hold your sweetie tight and sway to Stairway to Heaven, adult-style! Lucky for us, this time around we will be sporting sequins without the gangly teenage limbs, but with the super smooth dance moves. No need to worry about spiking the punch, either; we will be serving a specialty cocktail, Athena’s Nectar, featuring PAMA pomegranate liqueur.

Your attendance at Head Over Heels will benefit young ladies from Grady High School, Maynard Jackson High School, and Cross Keys High School by providing them with a “recycled” dress in exchange for community service hours. This month these lovely girls donated their time to Project Open Hand, packaging a portion of the 5,000 meals that are distributed daily to senior and chronically-ill clients. The girls donned fabulous hairnets and collectively contributed 135 hours of service. Along with Grady moms, AW spent last Saturday transporting over 150 gowns for a personal “shop” day; we sent the beaming teenagers away with a dress of their choice to be dry-cleaned courtesy of our generous donors. AW volunteer Kristi Bertucci worked with senior Michal Williams to find a dress; Michal coincidentally chose one that Kristi wore as a bridesmaid in her fiance’s brother’s wedding. Kristi recalls, “My heart sang when Michal picked the dress. Seeing the smile on her face when she realized she found ‘the one’ was a feeling like no other. I am thrilled that Michal chose my dress. Of the girls I connected with, she was the most excited by Project Open Hand. She had never done anything like that before and wants to do it again!” AW will be traveling to Cross Keys High School next weekend where we will be helping 40 girls find their ball gowns.

A few last minute notes for all you prom-trotters:

Parking: You can park anywhere on the street or in any of the unnumbered spaces in the parking lot behind Serpas Restaurant (located right next to Studioplex Lofts). Numbered spaces are for residents only, so unless you want a boot or ticket for Easter, don’t park in one.

Cash: You will receive two drink tickets when you check in at the door. For additional drinks, the bar will accept cash only, so be sure to bring wads of the green stuff to throw at us! Sorry for the inconvenience, but we have no credit card capacity.

Dinner: We will not be serving food at the event – just lots of adult beverages! Therefore, we recommend getting dinner at one of the many delicious restaurants nearby. Some suggestions: Serpas, Rathbun’s, Fritti, Zaya, or Parish. For those of you who want to maximize convenience, Serpas is literally right next door to the event (and has great food too)! We already know of several parties planning to eat dinner at Serpas that night, so be sure to make reservations if you intend to do the same.

ID: We will be checking IDs at the door (not that we’re expecting much of the underage crowd), so be sure to bring yours with you!

Community Center: The event is taking place in Studioplex’s community center. It’s a little bit tucked away in the complex, but we will have signage out front directing you where to go. You can also ask the Serpas valet boys to direct you to the right spot.

Dress Code: Black tie optional. We suspect we’ll have men in suits; men in tuxes; men in crushed velvet tuxes; men with moustaches; women in suits; women in modern prom dresses; women in prom dresses circa 1984; women in cocktail dresses, etc., etc., etc.

Party Pants: Don’t forget ‘em!

Shout-out:  A special thanks to all of our lovely for donors for providing items for our prizes: The Arizona Pub, Brick Store Pub, Fernbank Museum, McCormick & Schmick’s, Midway Pub, Only You Tattoo, POP Jewelry Collective, Porter Beer Bar, Shanay Norvell Fitness, Six Feet Under, Squash Blossom Boutique, Tavern 99, and Twain’s Billiards & Tap.

Head Over Heels!

Dust off your dancing shoes! Athena’s Warehouse is hosting a prom-themed fundraiser, Head Over Heels, on March 12th from 8pm-12 at Studioplex Lofts. All proceeds will go towards dry cleaning dresses for this upcoming prom season. In exchange for a dress, the girls will be giving their time to Project Open Hand. Open Hand prepares and delivers 5,000 meals daily for senior and chronically-ill clients. Tickets will be $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Each ticket will come with two drink tickets. Share the Love Benefit Concert

Last March Sanctuary Real Estate sponsored Athena’s Warehouse in the first annual Share the Love event. Share the Love is a 70s-inspired charity event that supports several non-profit groups, including Project Open Hand. We are partnering up with Open Hand this year, so that the girls will donate their time in exchange for a dress.

This year’s Share the Love event will be held on March 25 from 8-12 p.m. at Amsterdam Bar. The fabulous 70s-themed band, Susi French Connection, will be crankin’ out the groovy tunes! Come support Sanctuary, Open Hand, and Atlanta Pet Rescue with a $20 entry fee at the door.
