Be Awesome, Be Aware Fall Kickoff

After a relaxing summer break, we’re back to school and ready for action. Last spring we implemented a new teen awareness program at Cross Keys High School called Be Awesome, Be Aware, which explores real-life topics such as career, positive body image, nutrition, sex education, and self-defense. The seven-workshop curriculum is taught by professional guest speakers, and at the end of the program, participants are eligible for the $1,000 Sanctuary Empowerment Scholarship funded by Sanctuary Real Estate.

This fall we’re excited to announce that Be Awesome, Be Aware is back for a second round at Cross Keys. Our new curriculum includes college preparation, a 5K race to raise awareness for sexual trafficking and child prostitution, teen pregnancy prevention, and social etiquette. Orientation kicks off this afternoon. Can’t wait to meet a new batch of girls and get the school year started!

Be AW You Can Be

Happy Tuesday, everyone! Apologies for the lack of posts lately. We recently wrapped up the Be Awesome Be Aware program with Cross Keys High School, ending with a workshop on Civic Duty and what it means to be socially responsible. Founder Bee spoke about her impetus to help others, inspired by her roots as the daughter of Vietnamese refugees, who received sponsorship and assistance from church, family, and the government after fleeing a war-torn country. One of Bee’s favorite local nonprofits is Atlanta Mission, which provides emergency shelter, rehabilitation services, and long-term residential recovery to women and women with children who are seeking recovery for chemical dependency, domestic violence, and other life-controlling problems. Every year, she personally packs and donates Christmas shoeboxes to the women and children of Atlanta Mission. For the last workshop, we decided to do something similar—except instead of Christmas shoeboxes, we packed Easter baskets. We had a great time assembling baskets with the girls, who also included personal notes wishing the recipients a happy Easter.

With the conclusion of Be Awesome Be Aware, we’ve reflected on the program as a whole and realize that, yes, we’re still rough around the edges. There were times when we could have been more organized, more efficient. But we know better now, and our program had a good first run. We also met some great people who generously donated their time to our little organization. (Melanie S. Taylor, Chef Carlin, Planned Parenthood, Todd and Leigh Layton, Desiree Nathanson, Banking On Our Future—we couldn’t have done it without you.)

Most importantly, the girls learned a lot, too. They are more prepared for college, for the real world, than they were in January, and they themselves are wonderful people: smart, mature, hopeful, open, honest, funny, and enthusiastic. We’ll miss them dearly and wish them nothing but the best in college—and hope they carry something from Athena’s Warehouse with them, whether it’s how to shop on a budget, apply for a job, or simply believe in yourself.

And as mentioned in previous posts, Be Awesome Be Aware isn’t only about real-life awareness and personal support—we also believe in empowerment through higher education, which is why one of our participants will receive a $1,000 scholarship, funded by our amazing sponsor, Sanctuary Real Estate. The Board of Directors will judge based on a personal essay describing the impact the workshops have had on the recipient’s life. Come May 15th, we’ll announce the winner at Cross Keys’ Honors Night.

On another note, grab your tickets to our 2nd annual prom fundraiser, Old Hollywood on Friday, May 6th at Sutra Lounge from 8 to 11 pm. We’ll have fabulous raffle prizes, drink specials, awesome music from Dubsmash, a photo booth from LeahAndMark.com, and even a red carpet. Tickets are only $20, and the proceeds will help us continue to fund programs like Be Awesome Be Aware and the Prom Project.

Prom, Open Hand, and Future Events

Hey fellow warriors! Here at AW, we’ve been as busy as ever, wrapping up the Prom Project at Open Hand; continuing the workshops for Be Awesome, Be Aware; and gearing up for our annual adult prom fundraiser in May. Here’s a quick recap:

The girls from Cross Keys and Maynard Jackson dedicated their Sunday to packaging meals at Project Open Hand, which distributes about 5,000 meals every day for a growing population of chronically ill patients. Open Hand has served the Atlanta community for more than 20 years, offering Comprehensive Nutrition Care for disease management and prevention, group information sharing and self-management support sessions, and Medical Nutrition Therapy. The staff is incredibly efficient, organized, and helpful, making the volunteer experience both easy and rewarding. The girls loved it—and even looked fabulous in their hairnets and aprons. After packaging meals, each girl received a newly dry-cleaned dress, previously chosen at Dress Day.

Meanwhile, we have been continuing the Be Awesome, Be Aware program at Cross Keys with great success. For our Self-Defense workshop, we had guest speaker Todd Layton speak about his experience as a police detective at Dekalb County. He talked about the importance of trusting your gut and being aware of your surroundings. Next, for our Positive Body Image workshop, life coach Leigh Layton (Todd’s wife!) and Dance101 instructor Desiree Nathanson worked in tandem to promote healthy self esteem from both the mind and body. We made emotional breakthroughs with Leigh, while the girls got to have fun learning a dance with Desiree. Coming up next week, we have Banking On Our Future (from Operation Hope) visiting for a session on Financial Literacy. Last but not least, we’ll end the program with a workshop on Civic Duty and what it means to be socially responsible and aware.

With the Prom Project over and the workshops nearly wrapped up, we are turning our attention to other events. Coming up on March 27 is Sanctuary’s 70s-inspired Share the Love benefit concert at Eddie’s Attic, benefiting Atlanta Pet Rescue, Georgia Organics, and yes—us! Show us some love and get your tickets today. In May we’ll have our annual adult prom fundraiser at Sutra Lounge in midtown. More details to come next week, but let’s just say you won’t want to miss it!

A Recap of Our January Workshops

Last week, we told you about our new awareness program for teenage girls, Be Awesome, Be Aware. The idea was conceived about six months ago, when we were brainstorming ways to expand Athena’s Warehouse beyond prom and community service. Although we love Dress Day and Project Open Hand, we wanted to make a more lasting impression on our girls. We asked ourselves, “Hey, what does a college-bound girl need to know before graduating? What would WE have wanted to learn at that age?” The topics we chose—career-readiness, nutrition, sex education, self-defense, positive body image, financial literacy, and civic duty—were the ones we felt most strongly about, not only because they’re popular or interesting but also because we wanted to provide a diverse, well-rounded curriculum of “real-life” lessons that aren’t typically taught in the classroom.

For now, we’re only offering the program to Cross Keys High School, to a small group of 23 girls. Three workshops in, and the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We started off with career-readiness, setting up separate stations for choosing a major, resume-building, and career assessment. Special thanks to our professional guest, Melanie S. Taylor (an attorney from local Atlanta firm Bendin Sumrall & Ladner) who helped lead the session with enthusiasm and expertise. Next, for our nutrition workshop, we had Chef Carlin come in for a hands-on cooking demo. A personal chef for twelve years, Chef Carlin is no stranger to making healthy, balanced meals on the quick and easy. (Plus, she knows how to shop on a budget, a must for any starving college kid!) The girls helped her make a pot of chicken chili with a side of spinach ravioli. The results? “You’re coming again tomorrow, right?”

Just yesterday, we wrapped up the sex education workshop, with a Planned Parenthood representative coming in for a frank, eye-opening discussion on safe sex, different kinds of contraceptives, STDs, and pregnancy. It went so well that we’re thinking of offering a one-off session for a bigger group outside Athena’s Warehouse, for both male and female teens.

In the meantime, we’re gearing up for D-Day tomorrow (whoa, already?!). We’re expecting 50 girls to show up, from both Cross Keys and Maynard Jackson, and it’s going to be a lil’ crazy. Thanks to everyone who has been involved, whether you’ve donated your time, money, dresses, supplies, or food—we truly appreciate your kindness and enthusiasm. It’s all coming together tomorrow!

Be Awesome, Be Aware

Workshops

This month, we launched a new teen program called Be Awesome, Be Aware, a series of workshops that focuses on real life topics such as career, nutrition, sex education, positive body image, self-defense, financial literacy, and civic duty. The program spans from January to March, and each workshop features a professional guest speaker. Best of all, each girl who attends six of seven sessions is eligible to apply for a college scholarship, to be awarded at the end of the program based on a personal essay. We’re super excited to start this new initiative, which was merely an idea six months ago. It just goes to show you that, with a lot of hard work and a little help from our friends, we can do almost anything. (All right, fine, we’re still working on that world peace thing…)

Anyway, we’re already two workshops into the program (another post for another day), and we’re looking forward to the next couple months. Stay tuned for more updates and details; we’re just getting started!
